The U.S Department of Health and Human
Services issued new guidelines in 2008 to help Americans find ways to fit physical
activity into their daily plans.
How much physical activity do you need? Adults gain substantial health benefits
from 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate activity or 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous
activities per week.
Examples
Biking, walking briskly, and playing sports like tennis or baseball are examples
of moderate activity. Fast dancing, running and sports like basketball and soccer
are examples of vigorous activities.

Make Half Your Grains Whole

Examples: Any food made from wheat,
rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain product. At least
half of the grains you eat should be whole grains.

All fluid milk and foods made from milk
that retain their calcium content, like yogurt and cheese, are part of the milk
group. Choose fat-free or low-lat milk, yogurt, and cheese.
Examples: 1 cup of milk or yogurt, 1 ½ ounces of natural cheese or 2 ounces
of processed cheese can be considered as 1 cup from the milk group. |

or peas, eggs, nuts and seeds are in this group. Fish, nuts and seeds have healthy fats, so choose these foods often.
Examples: Equivalents include 1 ounce of meat, poultry or fish, ¼ cup cooked
dry beans, 1 egg, or ½ ounce of nuts or seeds. |
